Job Requirements Position Summary
The Wound/Ostomy nurse, under the direction of the Physician, utilizes knowledge and skills to provide direct age-specific and culturally appropriate patient care through the use of the nursing process based on knowledge of principles of growth and development, serves as a clinical resource, participates in patient and staff education, demonstrates leadership, and serves as a preceptor. The Wound/Ostomy nurse is a registered nurse who has demonstrated expertise, depth of knowledge, competence and skills in the practice of wound and/or ostomy care.
Minimum Requirements
Education
- Graduate of a Registered Nursing Program
Experience
- 1 year of clinical experience
License/Registration/Certifications
- South Carolina RN Nursing License
- Current CPR certification
- Certified Wound Ostomy Nurse (CWON) within 18 months of employment
Preferred Requirements
Preferred Experience
- 1 year of wound care experience
Preferred License/Registration/Certifications
- Certified Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse (CWOCN)
Core Job Responsibilities
- Responsibilities include, but are not limited to completing and coordinating patient assessment, providing hands-on expert wound/ostomy care
- Measure and record vital signs, takes patient medical history and chief complaint. Record information accurately in the medical chart.
- Prepare exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments and supplies.
- Responsible for pick up and distribution of sterile from sterile processing department daily.
- Prepare and maintain supplies and equipment for treatments.
- Assist with scheduling of tests and treatments.
- Prepare patient for examination.
- Assist the provider with exams and minor office surgery.
- Adhere to and practice appropriate infection control policies and procedures.
- Screens, manages, and follows up telephone messages from patients, referrals, and pharmacies.
- Prepare and send prescriptions electronically per provider’s orders.
- Applies dressing and remove sutures as ordered by the provider.
- Explains patient’s problems, medications and procedures to patient.
- Uses printed handouts, booklets, samples, examples, and videos computer programs as applicable.
- Develops and presents educational programs and materials to patients and staff to support competent wound and/or ostomy care.
- Apply dressings and wraps as ordered by provider.
- Responsible for applying hard cast to patients and following clinical protocol for application to ensure consistency in application.
- Responsible for applying soft cast to patients and following clinical protocol for application to ensure consistency in application
- Use CPR skills when required.
- Dispose of biohazard waste according to state standards.
- Maintain OSHA requirements and practice OSHA standards.
- Perform accurate, legal, and ethical documentation at all times.
- Other duties as assigned.
